USGBC Develops Credit For COVID-19 and Green Cleaning

June 4, 2020

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has developed a new pilot credit in its Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) green building program.

The credit, Safety First: Cleaning and Disinfecting Your Space, is intended to support facilities respond to the COVID-19 pandemic through healthy and sustainable practices. USGBC’s credit offers guidance on effectively cleaning and disinfecting buildings using green cleaning best practices that also meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines relative to COVID-19. The new credit also includes guidelines for green cleaning strategies and steps to improve indoor air quality by reducing levels of chemical, biological, and particulate contaminants.

To learn more about the new credit as well as the policies and practices required to qualify for it, visit the USGBC website.
