While it might be a human knee-jerk reaction to dwell on the negative things that happen to us, Thanksgiving presents the perfect time to instead reflect on the positive things—in life and in business. You might be quick to assume that 2022 was a tough year for the cleaning industry. But despite all that might have gone wrong, a lot has also gone right. Let’s take a moment to look back on 2022 and see some of the many reasons to be thankful. COVID-19 Changed Cleaning for the Better The COVID-19 pandemic was particularly eye-opening for cleaning industry workers, who had to adopt new strategies to help defeat a deadly virus. A great example of such resourcefulness and cooperation is O’Connor Hospital in Santa Clara County, California, where two departments—Environmental Services (EVS) and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)—teamed up to create a safer environment for patients as well as staff. The pandemic also fostered a deeper consideration and definition of what “clean” means. Cleaning industry consumers are becoming more educated and aware of the cleanliness of their surroundings and the impact on health. ISSA continues to help consumers better understand the importance of clean through the Rethink What Clean Means campaign—something the cleaning industry can use to its own advantage. Working Remotely Works Despite some of the initial challenges, surveys have revealed that employees like working at home and that being able to provide that benefit is helping retain them during a tightened labor environment. Perhaps to the surprise of some in management, working at home is also proving to be more productive. Research and management consultancy company Great Place To Work® conducted a two-year study of more than 800,000 Fortune 500 employees and found most had either stable or increased productivity levels when working from home. Another survey found that, while decreased job engagement is being reported, it has nothing to do with working from a remote location. Technology Is Making Cleaning Better Numerous technological advances in the cleaning industry are making cleaning jobs faster, easier, and safer. A great example is the use of drones to clean high places extremely precarious for workers. Lafayette, Louisiana’s Cajundome—a sports arena with a dome that’s 165 feet up in the air—now uses drones to clean its surface. The result is safer not only for workers, but for the facility’s surfaces and the environment as well, as the technique utilizes biodegradable chemicals and a softer rinse to get the job done. Growth Continues Within the Cleaning Sector While other industries have been reporting slowdowns, cleaning sector businesses continue to do well and even have reported growth in 2022. In the third quarter of 2022, for example, growth was reported for the home cleaning services sector. Forecasted growth for health care facilities is also anticipated to be significant. According to a press release, a recently published report by international market research firm Research and Markets has revealed significant anticipated growth for the U.S. health care facilities management market during the forecast period of 2023–2027. According to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), national health care spending is anticipated to grow at an average annual rate of 5.4% by 2028, reaching US$6.2 trillion, and the health share of the economy will rise to 19.7% by 2028. The report attributes the growth to the escalating prevalence of chronic disorders, rising health care expenditures, and the increasing adoption of advanced technologies by the health care sector. The release also stated that patients are becoming more aware of the advantages of using advanced technologies and equipment that are more accurate and effective than traditional medical devices. The increased number of market participants and high availability of innovative cloud-based health care facility management solutions are expected to create lucrative growth opportunities over the next five years. The soft service segment is expected to hold the largest share of the market, due to its greater role in making the workplace more secure, pleasant, and efficient.
Despite lackluster growth in 2020, global flooring and carpet sales are expected to grow at a healthy compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 5% through 2031, according to a recent study by Future Market Insights. The market research firm’s study tracked flooring and carpet sales in more than 20 nations to determine its analysis. The study further determined that sustainability is now a priority among consumers, rather than an afterthought, as a growing number are seeking products in line with their environmental concerns. Many manufactures are introducing plant fibers into their flooring, such as sea grass and sisal, with the goal of greater eco-friendly appeal. Key Study Takeaways Application in education, hospital, and health care sectors will continue to create sustained opportunities for flooring and carpet industry manufacturers during the forecast period. Modern aesthetics, durability, and easy maintenance are influencing factors for consumers. Hospitality and retail segments should witness stronger growth as compared to other businesses, due to demands based on shorter lifecycles and more renovation. Public, manufacturing, and industrial segments are expected to grow in terms of revenue, backed by robust foreign investment and government investment in infrastructure. The United States holds the largest share in the global flooring and carpet market, thanks to a rapidly expanding hospitality sector as well as retail and commercial business and commercial sectors.
According to a recent article by Forbes magazine, a South Korean app designed to help home cleaning professionals connect with customers is headed overseas. Over the past seven years, the app and its Seoul-based company, both known as Miso (or “smile” in Korean), has managed more than 5 million bookings. Along with home cleaning and laundry services, Miso currently offers other home services such as pet sitting, home repair, and interior remodeling from more than 50,000 service providers to over 500,000 customers. With gross booking income nearly tripling from US$47 million to more than $128 million in just a year’s time and despite the COVID-19 pandemic, cofounder and CEO Victor Ching now wants to add 70 additional home services to what the app already provides. “You might need a wide variety of different services in a year, so we feel like the best experience we can provide for our customers is to offer a one-stop shop where you open the Miso app and we get it done,” Ching told Forbes. Ching also wants to make the app available internationally. He’s currently looking at expansion into Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and Vietnam. All that being said, Ching remains cautious regarding growth. “We are growing quickly while being cash-flow positive and like being in control of our own destiny,” he said.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced an award of US$50,643,113 in Pathway Home grants to 18 organizations in 14 states to provide training and employment services to formerly incarcerated adults re-entering the workforce following incarceration in a local jail or state correctional facility. “Leaders across all industries recognize that providing incarcerated people with quality job training creates opportunities for them to reunite with their families, enter the workforce and attain stable, quality employment upon release,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh. Administered by the department’s Employment and Training Administration, these grants will allow organizations to train and employ incarcerated individuals within 20 to 270 days from the time they enroll in the project. This initiative will help improve coordination between key partners in the reentry process, including workforce development agencies, community and state corrections agencies, jails, local health and human service providers, employers, and unions. For the cleaning industry, hiring former inmates and training them to take on custodial positions offers hope and purpose to these individuals, and provides a hardworking demographic at a time of labor shortages.
