New Tool Quickly Tests for E. Coli in Water

Affordable litmus paper delivers result in under three hours.

October 10, 2017

Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Canada, have developed a new litmus paper tool that quickly detects E. coli in contaminated water.

The bottom of the litmus paper is laced with sugar that attracts E. coli from water. As the water rises inside the paper, trapped E. coli reacts with chemicals to produce color, according to Food Quality & Safety. The testing method costs approximately US$0.50 and takes under three hours, providing a quick and affordable method for communities to test their drinking water.
