Nearly Half of Employers Plan to Hire New Staff in 2019

Companies looking for workers with good communication skills who are team-oriented

If you’re planning to hire employees for your business this year, you’re not alone. CareerBuilder’s annual hiring study found that 40 percent of employers plan to hire full-time permanent employees in 2019, and 47 percent plan to hire part-time workers.

Half of human resources managers surveyed for the study say they have open positions for which they cannot find qualified candidates. A high majority (92 percent) say they determine a candidate’s soft skills, such as interpersonal skills, communication abilities, and critical thinking, when deciding who to hire. The top skills employees will be looking for in 2019 are:

  • The ability to work as a team player (51 percent)
  • Strong attention to detail (49 percent)
  • Excellent customer service skills (46 percent).

Among employers looking to hire in 2019, 29 percent said they expect to pay an average of 5 percent more to new hires than they paid last year. Although rate of compensation is important, it is not the only factor people consider when looking for a new job. Employees surveyed in the study listed the following factors as the most important when applying for a new position:

  • Location of the job (56 percent)
  • The availability of affordable health plans (55 percent)
  • A good boss (48 percent)
  • A positive work culture (44 percent).
