ISSA Members Honored for Product Innovation

Products developed by 3M; Dow Chemical Co.; Ecolab, Inc.; Johnson Controls, Inc.; and Unilever have been named recipients of 2019 Edison Awards.

The annual Edison Award program recognizes the most innovative new products and business leaders. A panel of judges selected the award winners based on concept, value, delivery, and impact criteria. Winners were announced at the Edison Awards annual gala, April 4, in New York, NY.

Five Dow Chemical products received Edison Awards. Dow’s ECOFAST™ Pure was honored with a Silver Edison Award in the clean manufacturing category while its VORARAD™ Technology for Resin-Coated Sand Proppants received a Silver Edison Award in the environmentally friendly solutions category. Dow’s ENGAGE™ PV Polyolefin Elastomers received a Gold Award in the Solar Advancements category while the company’s BETAFORCE™ 9050M received a Silver Edison Award in the automotive materials and manufacturing category. Also, Dow’s OPULUX™ HGT received a Bronze Edison Award in the coating and packaging materials category.

3M received a Gold Edison Award in the Lab Advancements category for its 3M™ Petrifilm™ Rapid E. coli/Coliform Count Plate and Ecolab was presented with a Silver Edison Award in the same category for its Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) DNA-Based Legionella Test.

Unilever took home a Gold Edison Award in the home solutions category for its Day2 solution. Johnson Controls received a Bronze Edison Award in the environmentally friendly solutions category for its YORK® YZ Magnetic Bearing Centrifugal Chiller.

Study Finds Dual Benefits to Cleaning

Lower your stress and boost your adrenaline while sanitizing your surroundings

Here’s yet another reason to feel good about your career as a professional cleaner. A new Cleaning Rush Study conducted in partnership between Procter & Gamble’s Mr. Clean brand and Ipsos Public Affairs found that cleaning will improve your mood and give you a rush of adrenaline.

Adults between the ages of 25 and 45, who were participants in the study conducted in August 2018, wore a small medical-grade device to record their galvanic skin response (GSR) and heart rate (HR) while they performed various cleaning tasks around a kitchen. Researchers observed changes in both their GSR and HR conducive to an adrenaline rush, similar to the feeling people have when watching a simulated, high-intensity activity or sporting event. This rush made participants more likely to want to continue cleaning, with 66% agreeing that once they began cleaning, they often cleaned more than they originally planned. During the study, 82% of the participants agreed to clean a sticky mess that hadn’t been on their original task list.

If you’re on an adrenaline rush, learn how to bring your cleaning to the next level by studying the various levels of cleanliness. Determine if the job entails a basic cleaning, which entails dusting, damp mopping, trash-can emptying, and vacuuming, or a mid-level maintenance cleaning which entails wiping down trash cans, spot-treating carpets, and vacuuming vents. Your client may expect a deep cleaning which can involve refrigerator cleanouts, carpet cleaning/extraction, and restroom grout treatments.

CDC Discovers Culprit to Interstate E. Coli Outbreak

A six-state E. coli outbreak that sickened more than 100 people was caused by ground beef, according to findings from to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

People affected by the outbreak—living in Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and Indiana— reported eating ground beef at home and in the restaurants. Seventeen people were hospitalized due to the illness. The CDC has not identified a single supplier, distributor, or brand as the outbreak source and is not recommending that consumers avoid ground beef at this time or that restaurants stop serving it.

The CDC reminds consumers and food preparers to prevent E. coli by:

  • Washing their hands thoroughly before and after handling raw ground beef
  • Cooking ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Keeping foods that aren't cooked away from raw beef to prevent cross-contamination.

CMM reports that people cleaning commercial kitchens should focus on disinfecting ovens, refrigerators, floors, and exhaust hood systems to eliminate E. coli and other foodborne pathogens.

P&G to Reduce Use of Plastic in Packaging

Procter & Gamble (P&G), parent company of Procter & Gamble Professional, which serves the food service, building cleaning and maintenance, hospitality, and convenience store industries, has announced a company-wide commitment to reduce the use of virgin petroleum plastic in all packaging by 50% by 2030.

P&G’s commitment applies to its entire product line, both in the United States and international. The company estimates this will avoid the use of more than 300,000 tons of virgin plastic per year. Previously P&G had announced a goal of using 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2030.
