College Struggles to Stay Tidy After Housekeeping Cuts
Students are cleaning and taking out the garbage
Officials at Bacone College in Muskogee, OK, are assigning trash removal duties to students and hoping the students will be responsible for cleaning their living quarters following housekeeping layoffs, KJRH News reports.
The college, a private liberal arts college founded in 1880 and the oldest continuously operating institution of higher learning in the state, was rumored to close before the 2018-2019 school year due to budget troubles, KOTV-DT News reported. The bulk of the school’s faculty and staff were laid off in the summer. However, the school was able to open in August by cutting costs, including housekeeping positions.
College officials are looking at hiring contracted housekeeping for the future. In the meantime, students are noticing insect infestations, overflowing trash bins, and empty soap dispensers in living areas. College officials say giving students cleaning responsibilities will teach them to be more accountable.
