Building Technology Tackles City Pollution
New York high-rise cleans the air around it
Green buildings are becoming more popular as a means toward sustainability, but what about air cleansing buildings?
A new high-rise in the SoHo neighborhood of New York, NY, is using technology to constantly clean the air around it, Digital Trends reports. The building is made of panels treated with a titanium dioxide substance which actively alters the chemical makeup of the surrounding air. The substance not only directs dirt and water away from the building’s façade, but transforms pollution particles, such as greenhouse gases, into benign nitrates that turn into minerals and water. The building’s cleaning capabilities have been compared to removing 2,000 cars from the city’s Manhattan borough for a year.
