Although he is best known for playing and announcing football, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman was also once a business owner. During his keynote address Wednesday at ISSA/INTERCLEAN, he recalled how the salespeople at his Ford dealership began neglecting their professional appearance.
“Sometimes the leader doesn’t have to say anything, but just show an example,” Aikman said. “I started wearing a suit and tie every day, and within a week, without me saying anything, my team began wearing suits and ties.”
Aikman also encouraged business leaders to be themselves. “It’s good to look at business people who have been successful and imitate what they do,” he said. “But the best thing is to be authentic; be who you are.”
