ISSA/INTERCLEAN North America 2016 Recap

From October 25-28, 2016, industry professionals from across the globe gathered in Chicago, IL, for ISSA/INTERCLEAN® North America 2016. The week of networking and professional development provided building service contractors, in-house facility managers, and other cleaning industry representatives the opportunity to gauge the pulse of the industry and learn from one another.

Throughout the week, high-profile keynote speakers, training seminars, and innovative equipment demos were just a few of the highlights that trade show attendees were able to observe. Some even walked away with accolades noting their accomplishments and contributions to the cleaning industry.

2016 ISSA Innovation Award Program Winners Revealed

During the last day of the trade show, ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association, recognized the winners of the 2016 ISSA Innovation Award Program, announced by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

issaThis year’s ISSA Innovation Award Program featured more than 50 products and services from cleaning manufacturers and service providers. Participants entered into one of five categories: Cleaning Agents, Dispensers, Equipment, Services and Technology, and Supplies and Accessories.

To help determine the category winners, individuals representing distributors, wholesalers, and facility service providers placed their votes online at www.issa.combetween the dates of August 1 and October 21.

Exhibiting entries were on display during ISSA/INTERCLEAN North America, where attendees voted to determine five additional Visitors’ Choice award winners. In addition, the winner of the overall ISSA Innovation of the Year Award was announced.

2016 ISSA Hygieia Network Award Winners

The ISSA Hygieia Network—which works to eliminate gender discrimination and encourage diversity and the professional development of women in the cleaning sector—announced the recipients of its 2016 ISSA Hygieia Network Awards at a ceremony held October 25 during ISSA/INTERCLEAN North America 2016.

The Member of the Year Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the advancement and retention of women in the cleaning industry, was awarded to Janelle Bruland, president and CEO of Management Services Northwest.

The Eidyia Award, which recognizes companies or individuals leading efforts to reduce illiteracy rates within the cleaning industry’s workforce, was presented to the Asian-American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA).

The Rising Star of the Year Award, which is open to women under 35 who have demonstrated their commitment to further the ideals and objectives of the ISSA Hygieia Network, was awarded to Paige Horn, chief operating officer from Dixie Paper Co., Inc. and Dixie Packaging.

Man of the Year was awarded to Michel Landel, group CEO of Sodexo. The company was also a winner of the Employer of the Year category for its promotion of women’s interests and gender equality in the professional cleaning sector.

YES Industry Special Achievement Awardissa

The Young Executive Society (YES) Industry Special Achievement Award honors an individual or company from our industry who has made substantial contributions to the advancement of the cleaning industry and ISSA and who has demonstrated strong support of the Young Executive Society (YES).

This year’s award recipient is Jon Scoles, owner and president of Scoles Floorshine Industries of Farmingdale, NJ. He has previously served on the ISSA board of directors including a term as distributor director and a term as president.

YES Rising Star Award in Honor of Jimmy Core

The new YES Rising Star Award—in honor of the late Jimmy Core who worked for Misco Products for almost five years when he suddenly passed away just before his 25th birthday—recognizes emerging leaders under the age of 45 who are helping to change the way the world views cleaning by making positive and innovative contributions to their organizations and the overall cleaning industry.

Three emerging industry leaders were recognized for this years’ YES award:

  • Arturo Garcia of American Maintenance & Supplies
  • Stacey Wong of Servicon Systems Inc.

Behind the Scenes at an NFL Stadium

issaOn Friday, October 28, attendees of ISSA/INTERCLEAN took a behind-the-scenes tour of Solider Field, home of the NFL’s Chicago Bears. Not only did participants learn about the stadium’s long and vast history, but they had the opportunity to view various areas of the stadium—including the visiting team locker room, an executive suite, and the field itself. Additionally, participants were able to hear firsthand about what it takes to maintain and clean a high-traffic facility that houses not only an NFL team, but various concerts and events that seat tens of thousands of attendees.

Cleaning and Maintenance Management’s January 2017 issue will feature a profile of the stadium in addition to insight on how Soldier Field staff clean the facility, maintain the grounds, and keep the building up to snuff after such highly attended events.
