Color Coding Can Liners

The most common colors for industrial can liners are black, grey, white, and clear. Here’s a guide to how color plays a role in properly sorting your facility’s trash.

Clear: Natural color can liners, or liners you can see through, have become increasingly popular for security reasons. Companies want to see what’s in the trash rather than hiding it. Clear bags are a deterrent and reduce the risk of throwing out anything valuable or hiding information.

Dark: Most recycled can liners that contain post-consumer resin are black or grey and opaque, because they are easier to manufacture.

Blue/Green: Clear blue or clear green resin is often seen in can liners that are for the collection of recyclables.

Yellow/Red: Colors such as yellow and red are used to sort different types of waste and have specific meanings in hospitals: Yellow typically is used for infectious linens, and red or orange for biohazardous waste.

Light Green: Light green often is used for compostable can liners that contain compostable waste, such as food scraps or organic waste. Those bags are generally not for use in landfills, but go to a composting facility. Compostable can liners have to meet the stringent requirements of ASTM D6400 and carry USCC and BPI certifications. Commercial degradation is 10 to 45 days and biodegradation is less than 6 months.
