Running a university, like running a business, requires managers to adjust to changing times and conditions. For instance, North Carolina State University, like many organizations, has a growing concern for sustainability. Green cleaning goals and recent drought conditions have caused the university to heighten efforts to provide environmentally preferable and staff-friendly cleaning products while reducing water consumption.

The university has more than 32,500 students and 10 million square feet of facilities. Protecting the environment and human health, while reducing water consumption, is an undertaking that affects all departments, including housekeeping.

"Previously, we used foam guns and traditional mop and bucket cleaning systems," says Albert Scott, NC State's director of housekeeping. "But, to reduce water consumption and minimize health risks, we sought a more efficient means of cleaning."

Consequently, Scott began investigating various "no-touch" systems.

"They all had their own benefits, but the Kaivac stood above the rest," says Scott. "We were seeking a no-touch, high-pressure machine with the ability not only to clean restrooms but also to perform other functions, thus reducing the need for redundant equipment. "The machine is used primarily for restrooms," adds Scott, "but we expect to expand its use to include outdoor building entries, shops, tables, mats and chairs. Because it's lightweight, workers can transport the machine up and down stairs, throughout campus.

"The only problem is that we don't have enough of them," says Scott. "They're so popular that our managers would order one for all 275 custodial employees if we could afford it."
