Scientists Pen Second Letter Calling for Sustainability
Scientists are calling for nations across the world to implement environmental policies focused on sustainability.
As the earth’s temperatures continue to rise, more than 16,000 scientists from 184 countries published a second letter calling for nations across the world to implement environmental policies focused on sustainability.
The first letter calling for policies to benefit the environment was published in 1992 and signed by 1,700 scientists, CNN reports. Since then, the scientists write that environmental problems have gotten alarmingly worse. The 10 warmest years have occurred since 1998, with 2016 the warmest year on record. Earth has experienced a 26 percent reduction in the amount of fresh water since the first letter.
Carbon dioxide emissions have increased by about 90 percent since 1970. About 78 percent of the emissions come from fossil fuel combustion, such as through the use of coal and gasoline.
