NASHVILLE, TN — For the first time, building service contractors (BSCs) and the professional cleaning industry in general will be able to view and comment on a proposed plan to Green Seal certify cleaning and maintenance services in early April, according to Arthur B. Weissman, president and CEO of Green Seal Inc.
Weissman made the announcement during his speech Sunday at BSCAI's 41st annual convention and trade show in Nashville.
He did not give an exact date, but indicated that a draft of the certification standards will be posted on the Green Seal website in early April to give BSCs and the JanSan industry a three- to four-week window to provide comments.
Weissman expects the certification standards for services to be officially released in June. Selected BSCs could then take part in a pilot program.
According to Weissman, Green Seal's developing standard for cleaning services is ongoing and approaching the fifth stage of an eight-stage process that includes:
- Appointment of a "stakeholders" group of 120 representatives drawn from BSCs, government agencies, trade associations, not-for-profit public interest groups, chemical manufacturers and equipment suppliers
- A complete study of categories the certification standards will cover
- An environmental evaluation of the standards
- Drafting initial certification standards
- A public approval review
- A response to comments
- A final ballot taken of stakeholders
- Publishing certification standards.
Weissman noted that there is some fine tuning yet to be done on the certification standards, but the bulk of the document is ready to be released.
Weissman said that the scope of the certification standards for JanSan services that will be posted on Green Seal's website in April will most likely:
- Cover commercial, not residential, properties
- Include both BSCs and in-house facilities
- Not apply to "highly recognized" areas such as clean rooms
- Include JanSan chemicals, supplies and equipment as well as cleaning procedures and mandate employee training and communication with building owners and occupants.
