BOSTON — A toxic mold case has apparently become the latest cause celebre for environmental crusader Erin Brockovich.
Illness ravaged the family of house cleaning professional Patrice Moore and her husband Dean, a chef, in Abington, MA. A son, Ryan, died in 1996; the Moore's three other children developed strange rashes; one developed a heart infection. A nerve disorder due to infection hit Dean; Patrice suffered immune system deficiencies leading to multiple bouts with pneumonia.
Mycologists confirmed massive amounts of mold found under an 18-year-old addition to the house were stachybotrys.
According to the Boston Herald, after being advised to move out and get massive rehab done on the home, their insurance company, Safety Insurance, denied their homeowners' claim. That's when a friend told them to contact Brockovich, who herself had become ill after toxic mold infested her home.
Brockovich became famous as the subject of a film bearing her name that centered on her efforts to investigate toxic chromium leaks.
