First university building in Texas to be LEED-EB certified
Wednesday, June 24, 2009
WACO, TX — Baylor University has become the first institution of higher learning in Texas to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) certification, according to a press release.

The George W. Truett Theological Seminary, a 66,000-square-foot building, was just two points shy of obtaining a Silver rating, a certification one step higher than what the building received, the release stated.

Dr. Reagan Ramsower, vice president for finance and administration, said: "Baylor is committed to sustainable construction and being a leader locally and nationally in earning LEED certification for existing buildings and new construction. I am delighted that Baylor has the first fully certified LEED designation in Waco and McLennan County."

To add to the sustainability of the Seminary that was constructed in 2002, the housekeeping department uses only environmentally friendly cleaning products and instituted a stringent recycling program, the release noted.

University officials hope to push the envelope even further next year and obtain a rating of Silver or higher during the next recertification period, the release added.
