HYANNIS, MA — Demolition of an old control tower at the Barnstable Municipal Airport has been delayed after asbestos was discovered in the steel beams and foundation, according to the Barnstable Patriot.

After tests of material "came out positive" as asbestos, Airport Manager Bud Breault had to meet with contractors, subcontractors and the airport's "third-party observer" to discuss how they would be moving forward, the article stated.

"We won't know the extent until that meeting," said Breault.

"I hope it's modest and I can cover it with what few dollars are remaining in the budget. Otherwise, I'll have to go for terminal abatement costs," Breault added.

According to the article, Breault told commissioners that the non-destructive testing about three years ago did not go behind walls or into every nook and cranny of the tower because it had to remain staffed and operational.

However, once staff and equipment moved into the new tower in October, a thorough inspection of the old tower turned up asbestos at nearly every turn, the article noted.

The abatement work will represent about 40 man-weeks of labor, which will have to be done prior to the tower being demolished, the article added.
