LONDON — The spread of the latest antibiotic-resistant bacteria highlights how governments don''t completely grasp the situation, according to The Guardian.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has once again taken to the stage to warn that the misuse of antibiotics has threatened to render one of our most potent medicines useless, the article noted.
According to the article, health experts have been raising the alarm over antimicrobial resistance for so long that the warning has been dulled by repetition.
In a report published by the U.S. Institute of Medicine last year, antimicrobial resistance was described as "a global public health and environmental catastrophe," the article stated.
Because new antibiotics can take a decade or more to develop, the threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is no small matter, the article added.
