RICHMOND, VA — Virginia''s military was subjected to an audit after a National Guard Armory custodian collected a paycheck for 10 months after his building was closed, according to The News Leader.

As a result, auditors found "an overall lack of financial management reporting within" the state Department of Military Affairs, the article stated.

According to the article, a custodian at the Big Stone Gap armory, which was closed by the state in December 2009, was paid for 10 months after his job ended in January 2010 by faxing in a copy of an old, approved timesheet to receive his pay.

The department launched an internal investigation to put new payroll controls in place once they learned of the custodian''s timesheets, the article noted.
