SAN JOSE, CA — Janitors from American Building Management (ABM), who are members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1877, are protesting mass layoffs from Cisco Systems Inc., according to Labor Notes.
Since February, American Building Management has laid off 75 janitors, or more than 40 percent of its workforce employed at the Cisco headquarters, the story stated.
Janitors have launched a series of actions, including several protests outside company headquarters and a seven-day fast that ended June 10, that they hope will get the attention of Cisco Chief Executive Officer (CEO) John Chambers, the story noted.
According to the story, Cisco, which was named the world’s fourth most profitable technology company by Fortune magazine in April, blames the recession for the layoffs.
The SEIU is demanding that Cisco order ABM to reinstate all 75 laid-off janitors, and are asking that a discussion begin about how to raise standards for other contracted service workers, the story added.
