The decision followed a two-year battle between the local and SEIU and an administrative hearing officer''s conclusion that the president of the local, Sal Rosselli, and others have mishandled union dues for political purposes; Rosselli called the allegation "bogus" and said the move was retribution for criticism of the president of SEIU, Andy Stern, the story stated.
Shayne Silva, an employee at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center
, said: "Had they been more receptive to us, it might have been [more difficult to break away from the SEIU], but they have been so overbearing, so unwilling to talk and so assertive of their rights as opposed to our rights."
Rosselli and other select ousted officers formed a new union, the National Union of Healthcare Workers
, and will endeavor to represent the same workers they did when affiliated with SEIU, the story noted.
Petitions were filed Monday at the National Labor Relations Board
office in Oakland that set into motion the possibility of board-run elections where SEIU members can vote whether to decertify SEIU and join a new union, the story added.
