Thursday''s Ask the Experts question from a cleaning professional on the International Custodial Advisors Network (ICAN) "Ask the Experts" page: I have a recently laid granite floor which is appearing as if it has dampness in it and water marks. It is polished and can not be take up or relaid. Please advise. It is located in a dry climate and high foot taffic area.

The answer:

Granite is absorbent and porous so it could be moisture from the installation, from the slab or below, or from cleaning if it is not sealed with an impregnating sealer. It could also be oil or stains from something oily that was used to clean or spot the floor. It''s also possible that water or moisture is coming from above or below the floor or slab from a leaky pipe or roof. Even in a dry climate ... — Lynn E. Krafft, ICAN/ATEX editor
