JUNEAU, AK — Health officials say that, while three cruises have been hit by norovirus outbreaks, it''s no cause for concern, according to the Sacramento Bee.
Two cruises, ending May 30 and June 9, each had about 140 passengers and crew members fall ill, the article stated.
According to the article, Captain Jaret Ames of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) traveled from Atlanta headquarters to San Francisco to help evaluate the consecutive outbreaks.
"I was really trying to look at first whether or not something that was an onboard source for the illness, maybe something in the food safety system, the potable water system, the pools and spas and so forth," Ames said.
Since the most infectious passengers are usually too ill to leave the ships, the recent outbreaks pose minimal risk for those on shore, the article noted.
