LAKE PLACID, FL — A 79-year-old woman who believed she was getting a free carpet cleaning was scammed out of hundreds of dollars, according to Highlands Today.
According to the story, Faye Hamilton was visited at her home by a woman claiming to be from a new carpet cleaning business and offered Hamilton a free cleaning.
Hamilton said: "It wasn''t free. It cost me over $400."
The woman returned with a man who used vacuuming equipment to clean areas of the carpet, going so far as to point out the dirt he had cleaned, the story stated.
According to the story, the man then asked to use the bathroom; Hamilton and her adult son Kevin were outside on the porch during the cleaning, but noticed that he took a particularly long time in the bathroom.
Hamilton said: "That should have been my first clue."
The man then said he needed to prepare equipment to shampoo the carpet, but instead packed up his vehicle and both the man and woman left, the story stated.
It was then that Hamilton found money and a check missing from her bedroom, the story noted.

Highlands County Sheriff''s Lt. Tim Lethbridge said the investigation into the con is ongoing and that no arrests have been made.
