LAS VEGAS — The SURFACES floor covering show opened this week with a wide offering of seminars and a jam packed exhibit hall. Bill Griffin, owner of Cleaning Consultant Services Inc. and Master Trainer for the Cleaning Management Institute (CMI) was there to cover the event.
As I walked the aisles, I kept my eye open for new trends that will impact professional cleaner in the future; here''s what caught my eye:
• New ultra-soft fibers are being introduced by carpet manufacturers; the silk feel is in. Time will tell how they hold up to traffic and cleaning. I have my doubts.
• More wool and less nylon fibers were present this year. Mohawk Industries has a carpet fiber made of 37 percent corn fiber. They were also promoting their recycled carpet fiber, which is made from used pop bottles.
• Colors are changing; things are brightening up a bit. Less Earth tone colors were present this year and more pastels were on display. Expect to see more green, pink and yellow in homes over the next few years.
• Chinese products played a bigger role at the show than ever before. Booths from China were displaying carpet, stone, ceramic, wood, rubber, laminates, all types of vinyl, carpet cushion and installation tools — and the list goes on. I didn''t see any Chinese concrete yet, but it wouldn''t surprise me to see it next year.
• There are a lot of varieties of wood available, and they are more exotic than ever before: End grain, self-stick, highly textured surfaces and wide planks up to 14 inches were on display.
I was impressed with all the new products and innovations I came across. Some will make cleaning and maintenance easier and others will certainly complicate the issue for us several years down the road.
