MINNEAPOLIS — Custodians have voiced concern over the University of Minnesota (UM) implementing a new "team cleaning" policy, according to The Minnesota Daily.

Custodians first began questioning the new policy over four months ago, but say their dispute has yet to be settled, the article stated.

According to the article, Teamsters Local 320, the union representing custodial workers, filed a grievance against the university, saying the team cleaning policy was a violation of the workers'' contract.

The union and the university were set to begin arbitration on Monday, but scheduling conflicts have pushed the start of talks back by at least a month, the article noted.

The current custodial contract states that each custodian can bid on a specific area to clean; the union claims that team cleaning violates that clause of the contract, the article added.

In today's custodial environment, as an employee of a distributor that calls all types of businesses, it appears to be a blessing when an in-house custodial staff is able to stay on board in spite of contract cleaners taking over shop. Is sense of ownership and pride important? Absolutely. If sports at any level has taught us anything, it is that a sense of pride in the team is critical as well. Perhaps the Team Cleaning push is the employing entity's way of remaining loyal to the folks who have been such a big part of that entity's success while trying to be creative and looking for viable ways to keep that loyalty in place. I'm not taking sides, but I do see articles written by owners expressing this, and it is not an easy decision for them to make. I'm glad Team Cleaning has been proposed as a creative cost saving option that allows tenured Custodial Engineers employed.

In this day and age they need to be happy and thankful that they have a job. So you do team cleaning over solo. As long as the check don't bounce. I was a school janitor for 8 years and we lost out to Aramark because the school dist thought they would be saving money. I would give anything to have my old job back.
