SILVERDALE, WA — Teachers and students at Silverdale Elementary School surprised custodian Ramon German with an assembly to celebrate his becoming an American citizen, according to the Kitsap Sun.
According to the story, students honored German, a Filipino immigrant, with songs, speeches and gifts, including an American flag and a red, white and blue baseball cap.
German said: "I thank God for giving me this blessing. I am proud to be a Filipino and I am proud to be an American citizen now. I heard many people say this is the land of opportunity, so I decided to give it a try."
German was serenaded with student renditions of patriotic songs like "You''re a Grand Old Flag" and "This Land Is Your Land," and the school was led in the Pledge of Allegiance, all in an effort to make German feel at home in his new country, the story stated.
German has been a custodian in the Central Kitsap School District
for the past five years since coming to America
from the Philippines, the story noted.
German was also presented with a pin combining the American and Filipino flags, the story added.
