YELLOWKNIFE, NT, Canada — When students at St. Joseph Middle School learned that a janitor from nearby William McDonald Middle School was taking on a second job to help pay for his wife''s cancer treatment and to take her on a nice vacation, they decided to help pay for the trip with a fundraiser, according to the Northern News Service.
The "Pick a Prize Raffle" raised $2,280 for John Carter and his wife Tracy by raffling off items donated by local businesses, including a hotel stay, a barbecue set and an iPod, the story stated.
According to the story, students, teachers and parents from both William McDonald and St. Joseph loaded up on tickets, helping students far surpass their $1,500 goal.
The students said they were happy to help the deserving janitor, and that the look on his face when he was presented the check was worth all the effort, the story noted.
Carter hopes to take his wife somewhere warm by June, after her chemotherapy treatments are finished, the story added.
