BENNINGTON, VT — Local school officials are voicing their support of a bill that would require the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products in schools, according to the Bennington Banner.
If signed into law by Governor Peter Shumlin, all public and independent schools would be required to exclusively purchase cleaning products and air fresheners deemed environmentally preferable as of July 1, the article stated.
"In my opinion this bill is an effort at improving the overall safety, air quality and environment within our schools," said James Marsden, maintenance director for Mount Anthony Union middle and high school.
According to the article, the bill, S.92, is intended to keep cleaning supplies that contain toxic chemicals linked to asthma, cancer and other health issues out of schools.
The bill was almost passed in 2011 but was shelved for a year in order to make final revisions, the article noted.
