EL CERRITO, CA — Darell Valentine is more than just a janitor at Harding Elementary School, he is a mentor, according to MMIX-TV.
Valentine, known by students simply as "Mr. V," has been cleaning the school and inspiring students for 10 years, the story stated.
Valentine said: "I didn''t know we were poor because my Dad and I played jokes, laughed a lot. But we''re serious on education. That''s what I''m doing with the kids here. This is where my life really is, is in this school."
Valentine, who buys Harding school T-shirts for students who cannot afford them through a can and bottle recycling program he started, helps students with homework and gives them school supplies with leftover fundraising funds, the story noted.
Valentine makes a point to greet each and every student by name in the morning and is hailed as "a hero and the heart and soul of the school" by many in the school community, the story added.
