NEW LONDON, CT — Workers who show up to work feeling fine, but soon suffer from chronic coughs and sneezing, scratchy throats, itchy eyes and even headaches, have reached a breaking point, according to The Day.

While most believe mold to be the root cause of these problems, none can be found, the article stated.

According to the article, Brian Sauvageau, an occupational hygienist with CONN OSHA, says the true culprit is actually dust.

With reduced custodial budgets, routine cleanings aren''t getting done as well, or at all; poor air circulation and blocked heating systems aggravate the problem, the article noted.

In the past 14 months, Sauvageau has investigated 20 complaints filed by people who thought mold was compromising the air quality in their workplaces; of hundreds of samples he collected, only one had mold levels that were considered significant, the article added.

"It seems invariably I find dust. In some cases it''s extremely bad — years of accumulation," said Sauvageau.
