BLOOMINGTON, MN — A community rally is scheduled for today to support 13 janitors recently laid off from Minnesota''s largest office park, according to Workday Minnesota.
The janitors worked in the Normandale Lake Office Park, whose tenants include major Wall Street companies that received government bailouts to prevent layoffs, the story stated.
Harvard Maintenance Inc., the cleaning company at Normandale Lake, is cutting costs by firing the veteran janitors and replacing them with new workers who cost less to employ, the story noted.
Organizers of the rally said: "Thirteen stable families in our community are now left without health care, without jobs and face losing their homes."
Some of the displaced janitors have as many as 12 years of experience at the building and are more aware of its needs and special cleaning requirements than new hires, the story added.
