BINGHAMTON, NY — In the wake of the historic flooding in the past few weeks, the Broome County Health Department has issued pointers for proper chemical use when remediating flooded structures, according to WBNG-TV.
Always wear proper personal protective equipment, which includes goggles, respirators, masks, gloves and other things of the like that minimize dermal contact or inhalation of harmful vapors and bacteria, the story stated.
Reading labels and following manufacturer use directions is extremely important because, for instance, mixing bleach and ammonia will produce toxic gasses that can contribute to serious health ailments, the story noted.
An alternative to diluted bleach solutions for disinfection is lime, which should be used as per label instructions to ensure maximum effectiveness and to reduce any complications, the story added.
According to the article, residents are encouraged to either contact their local health department or a qualified professional if they have any questions or concerns regarding proper cleanup.
