TORONTO — Nine downtown Toronto office cleaners were allegedly fired by their new management company for wanting to stay in their union, according to The Star.

A union complaint filed with the Ontario Labor Relations Board claims Amphora Maintenance Services fired the janitors after taking over cleaning services from Hallmark Housekeeping, the article stated.

According to the article, a company can legally fire previous contractors'' employees, but the union is claiming Amphora only did so when the employees expressed that they were reorganizing.

According to the complaint, a supervisor told the workers on February 27 they could keep their jobs and work for the new company, "but only if there is no union."

It is illegal to interfere with the formation of a union under the Employment Standards Act, the article noted.
