Wednesday's Ask the Experts: Steaming VCT
July 1, 2009
Wednesday''s Ask the Experts question from a cleaning professional on the International Custodial Advisors Network (ICAN) "Ask the Experts" page: Is there any problem using a steam mop on a vinyl composition tile (VCT) floor? I’m concerned that it may affect the adhesive. We have areas around desks with dirt ground in from the wheels on chairs.
This should present no problem provided the tile is undamaged and soundly glued to the sub-flooring.
Avoid lingering in one spot long enough to soften the tile or the finish, or to drive steam into cracks and seams.
The flooring with the ground-in soil may require more agitation than the stream provides.
Cleaning may reveal a lack of remaining finish and the need for a scrub and recoat.
Mopping with or without steam, will not provide enough ... — Lynn E. Krafft, ICAN/ATEX associate editor, firstname.lastname@example.org
