SAN LEANDRO, CA — Waste Management of Alameda County (WMAC) has unveiled an $11 million, state-of-the-art Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold-certified organics processing and transfer facility, according to a press release.
The facility is only the third LEED Gold-certified building in San Leandro; it is the first industrial building designed to LEED Gold standards in the city, the release stated.
According to the release, the building features:
• State-of-the-art biofilter to eliminate odor
• Daylighting via translucent panels and solar tubes
• Ninety-five percent of construction waste recycled
• Forty percent of building materials sourced locally.
Excess materials from the facility are sent to third-party composters and, in the case of nearly 500 tons of Christmas trees, to biofuel facilities, the release noted.
