PHOENIXVILLE, PA — Deteriorating lead-based paint and lead contaminated dust are two of the most common sources of lead poisoning, and on April 22, the
US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) brought into effect a 2008 rule identifying safety procedures,
according to The Phoenix.
Although the EPA has endeavored to increase public awareness of these safety procedures, many contractors performing work that disturbs lead-based paint are either unaware of, or not in compliance with, the federal standards, the article stated.
For this reason, the full enforcement of the rule has been postponed until October 1, 2010: While this extension will help to increase contractor compliance, it indicates that the lack of public awareness surrounding the dangers of lead-based paint is major problem, the article noted.
