University to renew cleaning contract

June 2, 2011

COLLEGE PARK, MD — The University of Maryland will renew its cleaning contract with their current janitorial supply company, despite widespread student protests, according to The Diamondback.

Students and administrators have pressured the university to sever ties with Daycon Products, which is currently appealing a guilty ruling of violating federal labor laws, the article stated.

According to the article, students from the Drop Daycon coalition have said the decision only strengthens their resolve to get the university to cut ties with the supply company.

"We are going to keep going until we believe that justice has been served to Daycon," said junior government and politics major Ann Levie, a member of the student-run coalition.

"We are not going to let Daycon be rewarded for violating workers'' rights. Our university is rewarding them for violating workers'' rights instead of punishing them. And we are not going to let that happen," Levie added.

Ultimately, the university felt it could not sever ties with the supply company until the full legal process has been carried out, the article noted.
