Extreme Weather = Unwanted Water

Daily wear is one thing, disaster management is quite another. As extreme weather conditions continue to hit many parts of the country, some facilities are experiencing flooding and disaster cleanup on new levels.

A study released on April 17 from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies found that 82 percent of Americans report that they personally experienced one or more types of extreme weather or a natural disaster in the past year. However, only 36 percent of Americans have a disaster emergency plan or an emergency supply kit prepared for these events.

Facility managers need to consider the worst-case scenario. It is imperative to have the right equipment on hand to respond to extreme weather and protect the value of the facility.

Whatever the weather, chances are it will be wet. Each year approximately 90 percent of all disaster-related property damage results from flooding, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Over the past decade, the average flood claim in the United States has been more than $46,000 with yearly totals averaging $3.5 billion per year.

In the event of a flood, there is little time to dry out the flooring before warping, discoloration, or structural damage can occur. A seemingly small amount of moisture can end up causing damage that depletes the visual appeal and resale value of the building. When a quick response time can mean the difference between minor cleanup and major restoration, it pays to have a wet/dry vacuum and an air mover on the premises.
