Springfield schools sweep in to the future

November 18, 2011

SPRINGFIELD, MO — The newest member of the Parkview High School custodial staff is turning heads, according to the News-Leader.

Through its relationship with national vendor ARAMARK, the Springfield School District was selected as a test site for the Intellibot "Duobot," which is an autonomous floor sweeper and scrubber for hard surfaces, the article stated.

According to the article, the robot can clean, on average, 10,230 square feet an hour.

"It can do all the hallways and the big spaces by itself. The operator can start it, walk away and go do something else and then the robot will complete the work," said Rodney Owen, who oversees custodial services for the district.

"This is strictly aimed for big space — where a normal custodian would make two trips over it — to save some time," Owen added.

In exchange for providing performance feedback, the district has free access to the robot, which would normally cost about $26,000 to buy, the article noted.
