April 5, 2010
SMITHFIELD, RI - In light of recent flooding that has affected several areas in the Northeast U.S., Enviro-Clean Inc., a disaster recovery specialist, has provided steps for businesses and homeowners to help minimize water, flood and sewage damage until professional help is available, according to Environmental Protection.
Locals should be careful when handling flood waters because some water carries contaminants and can be hazardous.
According to the article, for instance, flood waters from rivers are considered "black water" and affected building materials must be removed and replaced.
After necessary drying, remaining structural components that were in contact with flood waters must be cleaned and disinfected, noted the article.
Among other tips, Enviro-Clean suggested that property owners:
  • Ventilate wet areas
  • Remove standing water
  • Take up saturated rugs and carpets when hardwood floors are at risk
  • Stay out of rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.
