Sears Tower to get $350 million green makeover
The 110-story, 36-year-old Sears Tower, which will be renamed Willis Tower later this summer, will receive wind turbines, solar panels and a 35,000-square foot green roof, all designed to reduce operating costs and lessen the building’s carbon footprint, the story stated.
According to the story, the five-year project would reduce the tower''s electricity use by 80 percent and save 24 million gallons of water a year.
Sustainable aspects of the project include: Improvements to window panels; an advanced lighting control system; low-flow fixtures; and mechanical system upgrades, the story noted.
Officials hope the project, which will create around 3,600 jobs, will end with the building achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, the story added.
