School district must replace gym floor for second time in a year

January 5, 2010
ANTIOCH, IL — Officials in Community High School District 117 must replace the main gym floor at Antioch Community High School after a broken water pipe flooded the gym with hundreds of gallons of water, according to the Daily Herald.
According to the story, officials had to replace the gym floor at Lakes Community High School just last year after seeping water under the floorboards caused major warping.
Community High School District 117 Superintendent Jay Sabatino could not give an estimate on the cost of repairs or the length of time the gym would have to be closed until after he receives an estimate from a flooring company sometime this week, the story stated.
According to the story, the flood occurred after a custodian attempted to fix a leaky pipe in the bathroom next to the gym, but twisted too hard and snapped off the cover; the employee rushed to the main shut-off valve, but the damage to the gym floor was too severe.
Sabatino said that the floor would have needed to be replaced in the next few years even without the flood, and that repairs will be covered by insurance, the story noted.
The damage to the Lakes Community High School gym floor last year was not covered by insurance and cost the district $100,000, the story added.
