School district holds first Custodian Appreciation Week

February 11, 2010

BARRIE, ON — The Simcoe County School District will recognize dedicated custodians as part of its first Custodian Appreciation Week, according to the Barrie Advance and the Barrie Examiner.

According to the Examiner, there are 350 permanent staff members working in the 16 high schools and 89 elementary schools in the district, many working in a variety of roles.

Custodial Services Manager Susan Justus said: "They''re a lot more than cleaners, they are building operators. They have technical skills and a lot of the buildings'' operations center around computers. They are dealing with the children and dealing with the community."

Custodian Linda McGill said her favorite part about the job is the students, the Advance stated.

McGill said: "There is always one extra-special kid each year that becomes your shadow and follows you around and wants to know all about your job. There are a lot of memories of those kids."

Custodian Appreciation Week will continue through Friday, February 12, the story added.
