School custodian takes initiative to give entry a makeover

April 26, 2010
TRAVERSE CITY, MI — Sheryl Chandler, who served as a custodian at Traverse City High School from September to March, transformed a dull entryway into a more attractive gathering place and is starting to receive compliments for her initiative, according to an article from the Traverse City Record-Eagle.
While at the high school, Chandler decided to do something about a neglected, unattractive area right inside the school''s front door, reported the article.
The custodian believes that first impressions matter and atmosphere determines attitude and, stated the article, the efforts to transform the space included hours of work, even after she''d started her new job, a full-time position at Central Grade School.
"I just wanted to create an inviting seating area where people could meet," said Chandler. "It is so great to see the school getting upgraded."
According to the article, the improvements included: Patching and painting the wall, which included an artist''s painting of the school''s mascot; a new couch and love seat; and a sill for an indoor landscaping area, which Chandler and her husband, Kevin, hauled in 700 pounds of sand to fill the area behind the sill.
The high school''s principal believes the finished area, completed in March, makes the school more inviting, noted the article.
