School custodian resigns after bringing rifle to work

FAIRPORT, NY — A custodian at Fairport High School resigned following charges that he brought a rifle onto school property, according to the Fairport Messanger Post.

Ray Woodham, who resigned June 11, is charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, the story stated.

New York State law forbids guns from being on school grounds.

Woodham purchased the rifle at a gun show and brought it into work to show it off to some co-workers, the story noted.

According to Fairport Central School District Superintendent Jon Hunter, no students were in danger as the incident occurred on a Saturday when classes were not in session.

Corporal John Helfer, public information officer with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, said: "He never brought it into school. It was in his vehicle. He never menaced or threatened anyone."

The incident took place March 14, and Woodham is scheduled to appear in Perinton Town Court June 23, the story added.
