SCA helps high school efficient auto design team compete on global level

March 5, 2010
PHILADELPHIA — Global personal hygiene product company SCA will donate $10,000 and Tork® products to Philadelphia Academies Inc.''s West Philly Hybrid X Team to help the group participate in the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize (PIAXP) competition, according to a press release.
According to the release, the team of 23 inner-city high school students based at the West Philadelphia High School Academy for Automotive and Mechanical Engineering will use the donations to help design, build and sell a super-efficient car at the competition, which has a top prize of $10 million.
Scott Robey, SCA Tissue category director, wipers, said: "We''re proud to support a program that provides local Philadelphia students with a rewarding project that teaches them many valuable life lessons like teamwork, project management and the value of sustainability. The students'' energy and enthusiasm for making the world a cleaner, greener place to live and work is commendable."
The West Philly Hybrid X Team is one of only three academic teams — along with Cornell University and Western Washington University — and the only high school team to participate in the global competition that attracts automakers and designers from around the world to design vehicles that achieve ultra-low carbon emissions and ultra-high fuel economy, the release stated.
The team, led by instructor Simon Hauger and team manager Ann Cohen, has previously performed well in the 2002, 2005 and 2006 Northeast Sustainable Energy Association''s Tour de Sol, the release noted.
Cohen said: "We are grateful for SCA''s generosity and product donations. We''re confident these resources will bolster the team''s presence and efforts at this year''s Progressive Insurance Automotive X competition and help us produce a winning product."
The team plans to use the funds to travel to Detroit for the competition, and will use the wiper products for various cleaning, maintenance and polishing needs, the release added.
