Protestors rally for janitors
STANFORD, CA — A protest was held in White Plaza Wednesday afternoon on behalf of university janitors who are set to lose their jobs this June, according to The Stanford Daily.
The rally was organized by the Stanford Labor Action Coalition to protest UGL Services, the article stated.
According to the article, the contract with UGL, which replaced the prior contractor ABM Industries, initiated a complex rehiring process including background checks and identity verification.
Several of the janitors, many of whom have worked for the university for decades, failed to meet the criteria set forth by the government and would not be eligible for rehire, the article noted.
"Stanford University continues to shirk responsibility for this issue by claiming that only UGL determines hiring and firing even though UGL would clearly respond to the needs of its client, Stanford," said Eric Griffis, class of 2012 and a member of the Stanford Labor Action Coalition.
