As many of you know, the environmental impact of the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is still undetermined for states that sit along its coastline. Due to P&G Professional’s connection with Dawn dishwashing liquid, we’ve received a number of inquiries from our customers and business partners regarding Dawn’s wildlife rescue program and how people can get involved. For more than 30 years, Dawn has been doing its part to help save wildlife, from donating funds to important conservation projects to giving Dawn dishwashing liquid for use in cleaning wildlife affected by oil spills.
Dawn is currently providing additional product to its main wildlife rescue partner, the International Bird Rescue Research Center (IBRRC).IBRRC is the pre-eminent bird rescue organization in the U.S., and since 1971 has responded to more than 150 oils spills, including the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989. Information about this organization can be found at www.ibrrc.org.
In situations like the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the IBRRC prepares immediately for an onslaught of oiled wildlife in need of help. Treatment is an extensive process that takes a lot of man power and time. The IBRRC partners with Dawn in oiled wildlife rescue efforts because it removes tough grease while being gentle on animals'' delicate skin. A truck of Dawn product was rushed to the Gulf Coast last Friday, and more product will be delivered as additional IBRRC rescue centers are established.
Dawn is providing real time rescue effort updates on www.facebook.com/dawnsaveswildlife, with relevant information and “behind the scenes" perspectives. Additionally, the site contains information on how the public can help with donations to wildlife rescue organizations. For those looking to volunteer their time and help in clean-up efforts, the IBRRC has informed us that all volunteer offers are being coordinated by BP, who has opened a hot line for this purpose (866-448-5816). Additionally, the EPA also provides information which can be found at www.epa.gov/swercepp/web/content/learning/rescue.htm.
For local businesses that earn their living off of the ocean and are affected by the oil spill, including restaurateurs, seafood processing plants and boat rental owners, the Small Business Administration is making disaster loans available in 13 Louisiana parishes and two Mississippi counties. The SBA has established 15 outreach centers with 125 staff on the ground in the region, a call center (800-659-2955) and secure web site application for the disaster loans.
