According to the story, the entire neighborhood has received the recognition from the
U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for its affordable housing, sustainable buildings and location.
While the designation is officially limited to North America, Mayor Gregor Robertson noted he is not aware of any comparable communities, saying: "With today''s LEED platinum certification, the Olympic village medaled in platinum, becoming the greenest neighborhood in the world," the story stated.
The certification falls in line with the city''s goal to become the greenest city in the world by 2020, the story noted.
An athlete''s village in Victoria, British Columbia, has also achieved LEED platinum status, but Robertson said the Southeast False Creek location ranked higher, the story added.
