Office cleaners threaten strike

September 27, 2011

PHILADELPHIA — Union leaders for the city''s office workers are planning a vote to decide whether or not workers go on strike, according to The Inquirer.

A "yes" vote would authorize a strike of nearly 2,600 workers throughout 100 city buildings, the article stated.

According to the article, the regional director for Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 32-BJ, Wayne MacManiman, claims the reason for the potential strike is a lack of progress on contract negotiations ahead of an October 15 deadline.

Under the current contract, wages begin at $12 an hour for workers at ABM Industries Inc., Arthur Jackson Company and Shellville Facility Services, but with an increase in food, fuel and rent, workers are in need of a raise, the article noted.
